RESEARCH

01 Researching shapes

rechte en ronde vormen.png

Shapes influence our behavior and feelings. We can easily divide them into round and straight shapes. We react, often unconsciously, differently to a circle than to a square. Round shapes respond more to emotion, often give a positive feeling and are more accessible than straight shapes. Straight shapes make a more stable, clear and businesslike impression. Round shapes come from nature and rectangular shapes are artificial shapes, these shapes do not occur in nature.

When people are stressed and tired, they can greatly benefit from being in a natural environment. Nature as a space to move, play, discover and take a quiet breath.

Due to the powerful shape without sharp edges, a circle is the perfect protection. In symbolism, the circle symbolizes infinity, perfection and perfection. The oval may be less powerful than the circle, but it makes it more accessible. The soft lines of an oval provide movement and fun. Organic shapes are the freer shapes with curved lines. Natural, soft lines have something spontaneous about them. They are flexible and provide a comfortable feeling.

ROUND SHAPES

RECTANGULAR SHAPES

Straight shapes provide an overview. Connecting straight lines creates a straight pattern and this gives clarity and stability. That is why a straight shape quickly radiates power. In architecture, the straight form has an efficient function, especially in cities this is important. The straight streets will take you quickly from a to b.

02 Sketching with shapes

While sketching I used my research as guidance. I used the circles that can be seen from above as a starting point.

What will the paths look like if I only use circles?

what happens if i connect the circles?

ON THE ROOF

I used the existing circles as a starting point while sketching. I then started connecting these to create various zones. The final shape (in color) has no empty spaces and ensures that the roof is given a different shape.

ZONES

In my design the roof consists of zones. each zone has a different function. Adding canopies makes it accessible in various weather conditions.

The round shapes on the roof make the roof a different shape.

All create different spaces by playing with height differences. By creating an extra roof, more space is created, and there is a space that can also be used in bad weather.

PLAY AND EXERCISE TOGETHER

It is easier to make contacts by playing and exercising together. In addition, you are active in sports and you get to know new people.

05 Colors

color pallet.png

During my visit to the roof, I noticed the color palette of the other buildings. for my design I was inspired by this color pallete. I chose to use the same colors, just a lot lighter and brighter.

06 High differences

render hoogtes en zones.jpg

In the blue zone (the extra roof and the space underneath) it is mainly about 'playing'.

The purple zone is for relaxing.

The orange zone is for doing sports.

To create different spaces and zones I started working with height differences. This also makes the roof more attractive in different weather conditions.

07 Entrance to the roof

optimal stairs.png

To get to the roof I made an extra entrance on the side of the building where many people past by. You can climb the stairs as soon as you walk up from the Koopgoot.

The existing entrance remains. Here people who have parked their car can access the roof, but also people with walking difficulties.

OVERVIEW

ZONE 1 -PLAYING

The first zone is formed by the new roof and the space below. In this zone it is mainly about playing.

To provide more light in the space below, I made transparent holes in the roof. These are also trampolines, but can also be used as nets to lie in. The rest of the space contains several elements of which the user can decide what to do with them.

There is a large play element on the 'extra' roof. half of this element can be used for various purposes, such as: hanging, gymnastics, boxes, climbing and so on. On the other side, you can swing, alone or with several in one swing.

The closed space that was already there on the roof (the ufo) is now used as the center. Here you can get objects such as a ball, a yoga mat or other toys to play with.

ZONE 2 -LOUNGE

The second zone is the lounge zone. Here I have added an extra roof too. However, this is not waterproof because it is made of the same material as the trampoline, it does provide shade and atmosphere. In this space there are some round lounge sofas where you can sit with a group. The rest of the space is filled with round seating elements in various sizes. Due to the light weight of these recycled plastic elements, they are easy to move. Here too, the user can decide for himself how they are placed.

ZONE 3 - SPORT

The third zone is the smallest zone. Here team sports can be done on the field. This zone also has a pool, in which you can skate, run, lie down and so on
